NHPfoundation - Preserving America's Affordable Housing
As Americans, we must work to shape the future of our communities by educating and empowering residents — and ultimately enriching our neighborhoods. As Americans, we must work to shape the future of our communities by educating and empowering residents — and ultimately enriching our neighborhoods.
Half of all renters spend more than a third of their income on housing, and a quarter spend more than half. And for low-income renters, adequate and affordable homes are increasingly scarce. For every 100 extremely low-income American families, for example, only 32 adequate rental homes are affordable (from Reforming America’s Housing Finance Market, a Report to Congress in February 2011). That means they often have to forgo other basic necessities, such as food and healthcare.

The NHP Foundation believes that affordable housing should not merely be a dream for America’s families.
We work for change every day by building, rehabilitating, and providing affordable housing to more than 20,000 residents in 17 communities across the United States.

But we don’t stop when the buildings are in place. We also empower residents to break the cycle of poverty and become self-sufficient through a variety of programs that focus on education, health, and wellness.

Every American deserves to live in safe, affordable housing—and we work to make sure that this isn’t just a dream, but a reality.
